But what about… “What about people in the Bible who lied for a good reason, like to save someone’s life?” This is a tough one to answer, even for adults, but here are some things to consider: 1) Lying is a sin. Period. However, the Bible shows us that no one is perfect, and there were those who sometimes made a bad or wrong decision even when it was supposed to be for a “greater good.” The Bible gives us several examples of this happening, but it never condones the sin itself. 2) There were occasions when a person or persons would seem to be justified in telling a lie to save their own life or someone else’s, yet they did not, and God provided a way of escape for them. (For example, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego) 3) Sometimes the person was not an Israelite who studied and followed the law of Moses. In the Old Testament, there were “times of ignorance” which “God winked at”. The bottom line, though, is that lying is always a sin. “A lying tongue” is one of the six things that God hates. (Proverbs 6:17)
