In John 13:34, Jesus tells us to “Love one another.” There are many verses in the Bible that talk about love – God’s love for us and the way we are to love each other. There are also many Bible stories and lessons that deal with the heart. In Lesson #4 of our Numbers Bible curriculum this Heart Suncatcher is one of the crafts that helps to serve as a reminder of the humble heart of Moses and how we too should have a heart of humility. Here is what you will need to make your own heart suncatcher:
- Clear contact paper
- Red and pink tissue paper
- Red construction paper or red craft foam
- Glue
- Red ribbon
- Marker
First, you will need to cut randomly-sized squares and rectangles out of the tissue paper. You can use all red or all pink, but I liked the combination of the two colors.
Next, draw a heart template, cut it out, then trace it on the back of a sheet of contact paper. You will need to trace and cut out two hearts exactly the same size. My template was about 5 3/4 inches across at the widest point and about 4 1/2 inches vertically in the middle.
Now you will need to peel the backing off of one heart and lay it sticky side up on the table. You may want to secure the heart with a couple pieces of scotch tape while you’re working with it. This is the fun part! Start placing the tissue paper shapes all over the heart, keeping them flat and smooth, overlapping as you go. Cover the entire surface area.
Peel the backing off of the second heart and carefully lay it over the decorated heart, smoothing as you go to avoid wrinkles. Now you are ready to make the frame!
Use your existing heart template and draw two hearts on red construction paper or red craft foam and cut them out. (I drew the outer heart about 1/4 inch wider than the suncatcher.) I used construction paper in this demonstration, but you could use craft foam which would probably not fade as quickly in the sun as the paper. Now you will need to draw a heart within those two red hearts about 1/2 inch smaller. Cut out the two inner hearts. You will be left with two red frames that will look like this:
Next, place some glue all along the inside of one heart frame and press your suncatcher in it. Before you glue your other frame on, you will need to glue a loop of ribbon for a hanger. Glue it securely.
Spread some more glue around the suncathcher edge and place the second heart frame on top. Press firmly to secure. At this point, the suncatcher is finished and ready to be used, or you can add a final touch by writing a Bible verse or a message around the edge of the frame. While this is being used as a kid’s Bible craft in this post, this suncatcher would also make a great Valentine’s day craft that could be shared in an exchange or given as a sweet gift to someone special.
