In Exodus 15, the Israelites came to a source of water in the wilderness but couldn’t drink it because it was bitter. It was called “Marah” because Marah means bitter. What woman in the Bible gave herself this name and why?
Answer: An Israelite woman named Naomi went to live in the land of Moab during the days of the judges due to a famine in the land of Israel. While she lived there, she suffered great tragedy as her husband and two sons died. She returned to her homeland to the city of Bethlehem and when she arrived, her neighbors couldn’t believe it was she. They said, “Is this Naomi?” To which she replied,”Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt bitterly with me.” (Ruth 1:1-6; 19-21)
