Peanut Butter Honeybees

Here’s some cute little bees that are fun to make and good to eat! This is a great snack to use for VBS and Bible class. Some of the suggested Bible stories to use these with would be: The Amalekites chasing the Israelites like bees (Numbers 14:39-45 & Deuteronomy 1:43-44); Samson (Judges 14:5-9); and Creation (Genesis 1).

Here’s what you will need to make these:

  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 T. softened butter
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 – 2 oz. milk chocolate, melted
  • Sliced almonds

In a mixing bowl, cream peanut butter, butter and powdered sugar until smooth. Add graham cracker crumbs and mix well.

Next, shape teaspoonfuls of dough into 1 1/4 inch ovals. Place the bee bodies on foil or wax paper-lined baking sheets. (I got a little carried away so my bee bodies are the mega size bumblebees!)

Next, take two sliced almonds and place one on either side of the body for wings. Or you could use four and have a set of upper and lower wings on each side. Place your melted chocolate in a decorator’s bag with writing tip or in a plastic ziploc baggie with a tiny bit of one corner cut off for piping. Pipe chocolate stripes along the backs of the bee bodies. Yum!

Now, give your bees some personality! Take a toothpick and make two indentations for eyes and add a friendly smile as well. Isn’t he cute?

When your bundle of bees is finished, store them in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Each recipe yields approximately 2 – 2 1/2 dozen bees.
