Look what we did at VBS! Our theme was “The Exodus” and Lesson 4 was about the Passover. The kids sampled unleavened bread with herbs to get a similar taste of what the Israelites would have eaten at their Passover meal. Here’s a simple recipe to try that’s featured in our Exodus and Life of Christ, Pt. 1 books from the “Growing Up in God’s Word” series.
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup water, or more if needed
- 1/2 tsp. salt, or as needed (optional)
- 1 tsp. olive oil, or as needed (optional)
Move an oven rack near the top of the oven and preheat to 475 degrees. Place a heavy baking sheet in the oven while it is preheating. Set the timer for 16 minutes. While the oven and baking sheet are heating, prepare the dough. Place the flour into a mixing bowl and add the water one tablespoon at a time, stirring with a fork until the dough forms a smooth ball.
Prepare a work surface with flour. Place your ball of dough onto the floured surface and knead rapidly until smooth, about 1 minute.
Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces, then divide each of those pieces in half so that you have 8 equal pieces of dough. Roll each piece into a ball.
With a rolling pin, roll out each ball of dough into a 5 to 6-inch pancake, dusting the top and rolling pin with flour as needed. The bread rounds should be very thin. Use a fork to prick the rounds all over, about 20-25 times.
With at least 5 minutes left on the oven timer, carefully remove the heated baking sheet from the oven and place the rounds on the sheet. Place the baking sheet onto the rack near the top of the oven and bake for 2 minutes. Flip each round over and bake for another 2 minutes. They are done when they are lightly browned and slightly crisp.
Place rounds on a wire rack to cool completely. They can be used as is at this point, but they will taste very bland. If you’d like, you can brush the tops with a little olive oil and sprinkle with a little salt.
This is great to make with children to explain to them the significance of the Passover and the importance of obedience to the Lord. When we served this to the children at VBS during the lesson time, we let them tear their unleavened bread and dip it into a shallow dish of olive oil sprinkled with herbs.
