As I was growing up, dinner time was family time and a chance for my dad to grill his children about school each day. The conversation usually started with the question, “How was school today?” to which we all usually mumbled, “Fine”. Then the questioning grew more specific: “What did you learn today?” Now, we learned rather quickly that it was unwise to answer, “Nothing”. If we did, my dad would press the point and express his shock that we could have spent the entire day at school and not learned one single new thing. We must have learned something new! Could it be that we weren’t paying attention in our classes? Hmmm…surely not! So my brother, sister, and I would come up with something, anything, new we had learned that day in which to satisfy his curiosity and end the inquisition. My dad wasn’t trying to be difficult or give us a hard time, but he sincerely believed in the importance of a good education and in diligence in learning. He also carried this over to our spiritual education which he and my mother conducted at home in the evenings. Dad wanted his children to learn the Bible and love it. He wanted us to dig deep into it and to realize it was a never-ending source of wisdom and knowledge for us. He has said on many occasions that you can learn something new every single time you open the Word of God, and he is absolutely right.
One of the key enrichment components in the “Growing Up in God’s Word” Bible curriculum is research. There are topics listed to be studied further, learned about, and meditated on. It encourages Bible study for children by having them check cross references, look at maps, examine charts and timelines, and to research topics and words in Bible dictionaries and concordances. There is so much to learn in God’s Word, that even a lifetime spent in studying won’t touch the tip of the iceberg. That is why daily Bible study is so important, even for our kids.
We are featuring a “Learn Something New Every Day” Bible question on our Facebook page. Be sure to “Like Us” to receive your daily Bible question, and please share this page and this feature with your friends to encourage others in daily Bible study as well. There will be a new question or research topic every day, Monday through Friday to encourage us all to get into God’s Word and learn something new from it. Our prayer is that we will all work hard to study to show ourselves approved unto God as we’re admonished in II Timothy 2:15 and that we will all benefit from our efforts to learn something new every day. (Thanks, Dad!)
